Ahoy & Welcome Aboard – I’m Jonathan and this is my little slice of the Internet for those seeking culture & substance through travel and meaningful experiences. For me, travel is about immersing yourself in a destination and seeing as much as possible; eating local food, trying out local bars, learning a few phrases in the local language and making new friends along the way.
If I’m an advocate for anything, it’s to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. Walk in someone else’s shoes or at least eat their food. It’s a plus for everybody.ANTHONY BOURDAIN
It is with that spirit that my girlfriend at the time and I left my native California and the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles to chase our dreams across the globe with the opening of our first boutique hotel, The Admiral Zaton on the beautiful Croatian coastline. We spent 4 years working and traveling in Europe – that same girlfriend became my wife and then eventually the mother of our son Roko. While our hotel welcomed guests every summer season, the offseason granted us time to do what we love most, travel the globe.
Things started to change during the height of the 2018 summer season, when we learned that we would not be able to renew the lease or purchase the property as we had planned due to extenuating circumstances surrounding the land registry and Croatian bureaucracy to put it simply. As the imminent arrival of our first born was right around the corner we were left scrambling to figure out what we were going to do, where we were going to live, and what the hell just happened.
I’m not going to lie, this was a dark and challenging period in my life, and still something I have mixed emotions about. The full story of this crazy Croatian adventure is the subject of my forthcoming book entitled, When The Tourists Leave.
But listen, at the end of the day I wouldn’t give it up for anything because the experiences this path has brought me have been life changing. If it weren’t for this life I chose I would have never restored a former Croatian communist social house into an award-winning coastal boutique hotel, gotten married in an olive field in the middle of Dalmatia, or had the experience of living and running a business abroad.
Now that we are back stateside I decided it’s time to sit down and share my stories both old and new.
So what is Capt. Steezy all about?
Never drop anchor, always keep exploring is the motto I try to live by – it’s a little harder these days with my little dude in tow, but nonetheless we try to never let the chance of adventure pass us by.
